White privilege and the inequality today in South Africa - Free Essay Example

Introduction This research paper, will be based on the concept of white privilege in mainly the educational sector and investigate whether it truly is the cause of much of the inequality and social issues faced in South Africa such as black poverty and high black unemployment . Secondary and primary material will be gathered from the web and physical books in the form of articles, documentary as well as eBooks (electronic books) which are relevant to the topic of white privilege and its effects on the quality of education for individuals in South Africa. Trying to explain it and its causes. These will be summarized in the form of literature reviews that will be used to add more substance, and validity not to mention weight to the argument that will take form of an essay following after the literature reviews. As the research of the topic develops potent questions will emerge and branch off and will have to be discussed to aid in substantiating the deduction of this paper. Questions like, Can black poverty to a certain extent be blamed on white privilege? or, does white privilege affect black males or black females more?, but at the same time not falling into the trap of telling a single story from one perspective as Chimamanda Adichie a well-known Nigerian author would put it. As there is a great danger of a single story. This research paper will further explore who has the power to deal with privilege. As some would argue its the government while others would debate its a case where we need white people to realise they possess immense power which they either need to give up or share, instead of using to further personal gain. As there have been instances where white privilege was shared by its white recipient with those who are not afforded the same opportunities as them. As well as instances where a recipient of white privilege acknowledges they are a beneficiary and then try to minimize the effects of the privilege on their life so that they can be in a fair race with others. This paper seeks to explore why either of these have not become a common practice by all white people in South Africa. One doesnt have to search for long or hard to see the effects of this privilege. It can be observed on almost every street corner one can easily spot a black beggar being passed by white commuters who dont eve n look at them twice but as soon as they come across a rare site of a white beggar they are quick to offer them aid, from the element of preference as white is viewed as better. Arguments where the points are raised about whether the use and abuse of privilege by white people has basically shaped the unequal and unethical communities we live in today. In which the most of the black youth are unable to further their studies due to the fact that they come from financially struggling homes. Or how when others from neighboring provinces do make it they are forced to sleep in toilets and lecture rooms as they do not have a place to stay since they cannot afford accommodation. While at the same time their white counterparts do not experience such or even think such is possible due to white privilege shielding them from such. The paper will furthermore seek to prove that people are being deprived of needed opportunities, which would assist in them bettering communities while minimizing if not eradicate the effects of poverty and other social issues such as unemployment or lack of education experience within their communities. But the paper also seeks to address the issue of people needing to understand that white privilege is inherited by these current generations and not created by them so it firstly makes sense that most of them feel they have worked as hard as the next guy of colour to accomplish everything they have. As it also makes sense they are unaware of the fact that they are beneficiaries of white privilege as they have been exposed to it sense birth and that it made it less challenging for them to accomplish everything they have. Secondly that the anger expressed to them by black people is because they are privileged and do not seem to want to acknowledged they are. The tension between the two races further escalates with racism and white superiority coming in to play while they seem to deny the existence of white privilege. In situations where white people seem to think its acceptable to undermine and disrespect black people whether old or young because of the fact they are inferior, poverty stricken and less intelligent than them. A perfect example of this would be Penny Sparrow and her all too familiar comments on Facebook that describe black beachgoers as monkeys, in an apparent reaction to litter left behind after New Years celebrations, even more so basically stating they are uneducated and that are a source of discomfort to others(white people). Or how white people are quick to jump to the aid of a white beggar at a street corner rather than a black one. Such leading to the conclusion that white people only love and value their own hence to the example of the beggar stated above or Penny Sparrows remarks. The same way a white tragedy gets more attention compared than a black tragedy. Which makes it clear that being white carries power because of the past practices and beliefs of Eugenics throughout the world and Apartheid in South Africa. The main issue to be dealt with in this task is how its believed white privilege has become a transparent power that assists white individuals accomplish more in their lives while also shielding them from difficulties, compared to their colored counterparts. It took a few hours of crying before deep anger rose and she thought to herself that all this time all she assumed people needed to understand white privilege. But she was wrong especially after the incident she witnessed, the level of violence and hatred said towards her by a complete stranger for confronting her lack of respect showed her as a white person how far behind whites are as a community. She realized how white privilege has deeply engrained and debased white people. And in her opinion that its time white people act, on a daily we witness these incidences occurring. Gothic literature began and was very strong at the time of the Romantic Writers Movement. Gothic novels share common characteristics that contribute to the overall feeling of the novel. Most Gothic novels involve a setting that typically added mystery and suspense. The novel usually took place in a castle-like structure that was dark, scary, and isolated (Examine). In addition, the story enveloped omens or visions, supernatural or inexplicable events, overwrought emotion, women in distress, and a tyrannical male (Elements). Both Charlotte and Emily Bronte wrote gothic novels that used many of these characteristics, but their novels also transcended the boundaries of the genre. The novels Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre follow the gothic tradition in regards to setting, atmosphere, and supernatural events. However, both novels break from tradition in the matters of feminism and heroines. Both novels were influenced by gothic tradition because each novel incorporates characteristics s pecific to the gothic novels. The majority of Wuthering Heights takes place in the castle-like home of Wuthering Heights. It is damp, dark, and creepy which contributes to the overall gothic atmosphere of the novel. Introduction When researchers asked a group of homeless youth why they left home, their responses were rather heartbreaking. Among some of their answers included were, â€Å"she kicked me out because I was too much of a problem for her†, â€Å"my parents are abusive and drug addicts†, and â€Å"because my mom never had a house and did drugs† (Bernstein, Fosters 2008). Unfortunately the number of homeless youths seems to be steadily rising. The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development database found that there were twice as many youths, namely between the ages of thirteen to twenty-two, living on the streets in 2013-2014 than in 2004-2005. Shelters are not able to keep up with these growing numbers, as the National Coalition for the†¦show more content†¦On the other hand, Mcree’s study Child Abuse in Blended Households: Reports from Runaway and Homeless Youth†, which analyzed 40,000 cases from youths who had sought help from homeless shelters, foun d that only twenty percent of people reported being abused in childhood (Mcree, 2008). The overwhelming cause of youths running away is to escape an abusive or unpleasant home life. As Thrane, Hoyt, Whitebeck and Yoder’s article reports, homeless youths are â€Å"†¦more likely than non-runaways to report their parents did not care about them â€Å"(Thrane, Hoyt, Whitbeck, Yoder, 2006). Children and young adults experiencing verbal or emotional abuse have also been found to be a large risk factor in homelessness. In Ferguson’s 2009 study, it was reported that half of the sample had seen verbal abuse in their household. From this we may conclude that by exposing children to verbal abuse at such a young age, it becomes to the youth an acceptable way to act and handle emotions. In that same study many homeless youths admitted that they often felt rejected by their families. Ferguson’s article is unique in the fact that it delves into the effects of emotional abuse on homeless youth, as this seems to be a form of abuse many articles failed to ad dress, perhaps because they regard drug and physical abuse as more significant risk factors to homelessness. Just grab your websites URL (or any URL you want to check) and go HERE.Just paste your websites URL and wait a bit, the process will take a few seconds depending on the complexity of the page. Keep in mind that the analysis is made in relation to that exact URL not the entire website. The page is fetched both for desktop and mobile usage, so you will actually receive two reports.Googles scale goes from 0-100, and each score is marked wi th a separate color, depending on the performance levels: red, yellow and green. Scoring over 85 points gets marked green, signaling youre on the safe side.The 10 rules of Google PageSpeed InsightsAfter running the analysis, you will get a detailed report on what your website is doing ok, as well as the things to improve, with actionable suggestions for both mobile and desktop versions. There are 10 main rules that Google is monitoring, some of them will be successfully met, some not.For the failed ones, you will receive advice on how to better handle the requirements, mostly addressing webmasters who can work their way directly into the code.Here are the things you should do first:1. Leverage browser caching (see the original rule)Some elements of your website can be temporarily stored (cached) to make the loading easier. Loading non-cached content (HTML, CSS, logo, images) will significantly slow things down. No wonder it is the number one fix for your website if you want to impro ve PageSpeed Insights score.Caching for WordPress websites is managed by several free and premium plugins. I suggest trying out either W3 Total Cache (free solution, link below) or going directly for WP Rocket, which has a price tag, but still very affordable (its what we use on the blog). Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript (see the original rule)In short, some JavaScript code may be interfering with your above-the-fold content, preventing the page from loading properly.There are two sides to this problem:The technical explanation: the thing you need to do is move the call to jQuery from the head of the page further down, adjusting when the call to the jQuery module is made.The simplified solution: you can fix the problem with one cool plugin WP Deffered JavaScripts. It will force  the browser to dow nload JavaScripts in parallel, helping  the site to load faster. Just install it and enable the options you want in Settings / Autoptimize. Minify resources (see the original rule)Unnecessary or redundant code affects the browsers behavior. Google will downgrade you when your HTML, CSS and JavaScript files are too large. Its recommended that all JavaScript files larger than 4096 bytes should be minified.This process is handled well by the plugins that also optimize CSS delivery, which we mentioned in the previous point: WP Super Minify or Autoptimize. Use them to improve PageSpeed Insights score.5. Enable GZip compression (see the original rule)Continuing with the code improvements, CSS and HTML can also be compressed. This is done with GZip compression, which reduces the size of your website before sending it to the browser. This can be set in various ways:You can have your web host set this up.You can set it in your .htaccess file.You can enable it through your caching plugin, like the aforementioned W3 Total Cache.6. Optimize images (see the original rule)Images contribute, on average, for about 60% of a web pages total size this is the largest factor influencing loading times. The optimization process c an considerably reduce the size of your images by removing unnecessary information, and by smartly re-compressing them using the most appropriate algorithms.The optimization may be handled in different ways. Lossless optimization is moderate and it is recommended for technical drawings where no details should be removed from the image. Lossy optimization can radically improve the website speed by shrinking images more aggressively. However, this will not interfere with the visual aspect of your image. Images will still be properly displayed on the web, and the optimization will not disturb the way users see the images online.Another thing, cameras and smartphones create photos with lots of megapixels, which are not needed for the web. In order to keep an optimal image size, and reduce server space usage, you should also resize images to a maximum width and height that your WordPress theme can handle.For a detailed how-to on image optimization please check out our other post here. Improve server response time (see the original rule)Slow response time may be caused by several issues: poor web hosting, web server setup, traffic overload or too many resources used. Googles optimal server response time recommendation is set below 200ms.Among other things, having too many poorly coded plugins may affect the servers response times.8. Prioritize visible content (see the original rule)A very good practice in website coding when building the HTML structure of your site is to put content first, and then all the side elements and JavaScript further down the page.Google also warns about reducing the amount of data used by your resources an option which should have been resolved by the plugins recommended when discussing rule #4.9. Use asynchronous scripts (see the original rule)When the code is executed synchronously by the browser, it cannot do more than one task at a time and will prevent the page from loading faste r.For this, Google has published a list of the asynchronous versions of popular JavaScript tools/script. Make sure that you use them instead of their standard versions to improve PageSpeed Insights score.10. Avoid multiple landing page redirects (see the original rule)Redirects are a nice tool for getting people exactly where you want them on your website. However, unnecessary redirects will also cause delays and make it more difficult to improve PageSpeed Insights score for your WordPress site.Google isnt particularly fond of redirects in any shape or form. However, when you do need to use them, make sure that you have only one redirect for a single URL.For example, avoid redirecting from site.com/page  » www.site.com/page  » m.site.com/page when dealing with the mobile version.If you want just simple one-time 301 redirects, try out a plugin called Linker. In short, it lets Google know that whatever youre redirecting isnt a temporary redirect but will stay there for good.
